Service Provider Networking Experts

Juniper & BNG specialists for New Zealand ISPs and telcos

Subscriber networks your customers never have to think about. We design, build and fix carrier networks with one target in mind: 99.999% availability. That's about five minutes of downtime a year.

Services

What we do

Focused, hands-on consulting for retail service providers, regional ISPs, WISPs and operators running carrier-grade networks.

Flagship service

BNG & Subscriber Management

Subscriber termination is where we've spent much of our careers, from legacy BRAS platforms and Juniper SRC through to today's Juniper MX broadband network gateways. We design and deliver BNG platforms that scale cleanly, fail over predictably and integrate with your billing and provisioning systems.

Whether you're replacing end-of-life BRAS hardware or onboarding your first UFB customers, we'll plan the cutover so subscribers barely notice.

  • Juniper MX BNG design & deployment
  • Migration from legacy BRAS platforms
  • RADIUS / AAA integration
  • Chorus & LFC UFB handover
  • PPPoE & IPoE subscriber access
  • CGNAT design
  • Dual-stack IPv6 for subscribers

Network Design

We look at the network as a whole: its current structure, your future goals, and the risks any change in architecture brings. Our design process is informed by the TOGAF framework, so decisions are documented, traceable and built to last.

Network Audit & Optimisation

An independent review of your routing, configuration, capacity and resilience, with clear and prioritised findings. We then help you remove single points of failure, tune QoS and get more out of the hardware you already own.

IPv6 Implementation

We manage IPv6 from start to finish, from address planning and obtaining IPv6 space from APNIC to rolling it out across your core, edge and subscriber networks. We've done it for carrier, enterprise and SOHO environments.

ISP in a Box

Launching a new ISP? We help you get from idea to first paying subscriber, covering core and edge design, BNG and AAA, upstream connectivity and UFB handover. You get a network that's built properly from day one and ready to grow.

Remote Hands

Auckland-based remote hands, any time of day, any day of the week. We can rack and cable equipment, handle installs, or get on the console to diagnose whatever is stopping you reaching your box. Our network of contacts across New Zealand and Australia can help further afield.

OSS/BSS Integration & Network Automation

We connect your OSS/BSS to the network, so that an order flows through to service activation without anyone re-keying it. That covers provisioning workflows, billing and RADIUS integration, and wholesale ordering with Chorus and the LFCs. On the network side, we apply DevOps practice to configuration and operations: version-controlled, templated config pushed through CI/CD pipelines with Ansible, Python and NETCONF/YANG, so changes are repeatable, reviewable and safe to roll back.

Why fivenines

Built for 99.999%

  • Deep NZ telco knowledge

We've worked inside New Zealand service providers and know the local landscape, from UFB handover with Chorus and the LFCs to the realities of running a regional ISP.

  • Engineers, not slideware

The person who scopes your project is the person who configures the routers. You get practical designs, automated and repeatable configuration, and working networks, not just slide decks.

  • Vendor-certified

Juniper Certified Specialist in Service Provider Routing & Switching, with hands-on, multi-vendor experience across Juniper, Cisco, Extreme and more.

  • Availability is the brief

Our name is our standard. Redundancy, fast convergence and clean failover are designed in from the start, not added later.

  • Proven in production

Fifteen years as Architect at Devoli, NZ's fourth-largest ISP, and earlier at Telecom NZ (now Spark) and WorldxChange, means we design for life after go-live: upgrades, maintenance windows and fault-finding.

About

Callum Barr

Director & Principal Consultant

Callum has spent the last 15 years as Architect at Devoli, New Zealand's fourth-largest ISP. Before that he worked in service provider networks at Telecom NZ (now Spark) and WorldxChange Communications, giving him more than two decades in NZ telco. Over that time he has designed, built and operated carrier networks, with a particular focus on broadband subscriber management (from legacy BRAS platforms and Juniper SRC through to BNG on the Juniper MX), and on integrating the network with the OSS/BSS systems that run it.

He is a Juniper Certified Specialist in Service Provider Routing & Switching and has worked extensively with Juniper, Cisco, F5 and Extreme Networks equipment. Callum founded fivenines to give New Zealand ISPs and telcos direct access to senior, hands-on networking expertise.

fivenines Consulting is Callum's independent practice. Its work is not associated with or endorsed by Devoli.
